Before You Buy a Sofa: What to Measure and Consider

A beautiful sofa catches your eye. The right sofa also fits your room, feels comfortable to the people using it, and works with everyday life. Before you order, spend a little time with the details that a photograph cannot tell you.

Start with the way you actually use the room

Is this where you sit upright with coffee, curl up with a book, stretch out for a movie, or gather with family? Write down the two things your sofa needs to do most often. Use those priorities when you compare styles.

Dawn’s staging work involves choosing pieces that look right and fit a space. Choosing a sofa for everyday lounging adds another question: will you enjoy sitting on it? A room can photograph beautifully without telling you how the seating feels.

Measure the seat as well as the sofa

The overall depth includes the back and frame. The usable seat depth is the space you actually sit on, from the front of the seat to the back cushion. Ask for both measurements, along with the seat height and the seating width between the arms.

Try sitting the way you would at home. Notice whether your feet reach the floor when you sit back, whether the cushions support you, and how easily you can stand up. If you like to lounge sideways, try that position too. Compare the measurements with a chair or sofa you already find comfortable.

For couples and taller shoppers: both people should try the sofa. A deep seat that suits one person may leave the other perched forward. Check usable seat width, back support, and any manufacturer weight limits for the exact model. There is no single measurement that suits every body.

Mark out the footprint in your room

Use painter’s tape suitable for your flooring to outline the sofa’s overall width and depth. Include the chaise if you are considering a sectional. Walk through the room, open nearby doors, and check access to side tables, outlets, and other seating.

Think about the furniture you are keeping. Will the sofa leave room for the coffee table and a comfortable route through the space? For a recliner, ask for the fully extended dimensions and required wall clearance. A taped outline checks the footprint, but it will not show the visual weight of a tall back or wide arms.

Measure the whole delivery route

Start at the entrance and follow the route to the room. Record doorway and hallway clearances, stair turns, landings, and elevator dimensions where relevant. Note fixed obstacles such as handrails and trim.

Ask the retailer how the exact model arrives, whether any parts are designed to be removed, and whether its delivery team can assess your measurements. A doorway measurement alone cannot confirm that a sofa will turn a tight corner. Room & Board’s furniture delivery measuring guide is a useful reference for what to record.

Get specific about fabric and cushion care

Request a swatch and look at it in your room during the day and with your lamps on. Compare it with the rug, flooring, curtains, and other upholstery that will stay. If pets share the sofa, think about how the texture and color will work with their fur and your cleaning routine.

Ask for the exact fabric’s written cleaning instructions. Find out whether cushion covers are removable, whether they are washable, and what regular care the cushion fill requires. A removable cover does not automatically mean it can go in the washing machine. Treat descriptions such as “performance” as a starting point for questions about the specific fabric.

Check the terms before you order

Confirm the full delivered price, what delivery includes, the estimated lead time, and what happens if the piece cannot fit. Read the cancellation, return, and warranty terms for your exact order, especially when selecting custom fabric. Keep the model name, dimensions, fabric details, and order terms together.

Your before-you-buy checklist

You do not need to rush a purchase you will live with every day. Take your measurements, ask the practical questions, and give yourself permission to keep looking until the sofa works for you.
