How to Host a Small Brunch at Home Without Overcomplicating It

A few friends around your table can be a lovely way to reconnect. Start with the gathering you can comfortably host, then choose a menu and table that support it.
Set a clear, friendly invitation
Choose a date, a start time, and a small guest list that fits your table. Let guests know whether you are planning a seated meal or a relaxed coffee-and-pastry morning. Ask about dietary needs before settling the menu.
An invitation can be as simple as: “Would you like to come over for brunch Sunday at eleven? I'd love a chance to catch up.”
Choose a menu with one main job
Build around one main dish you already know how to prepare, then add easy companions. For example, offer a savory baked dish, fruit, and a purchased pastry, with coffee, tea, and water. That is a menu framework, so adapt it to your guests and the recipes you trust.
If you want to try a new recipe, practice it before the gathering. You will enjoy the morning more when you know what the food requires.
Let the table stay useful
Ivory plates, olive napkins, and a small arrangement can create a warm setting without many accessories. Keep the flowers low enough for conversation, and leave room for cups and serving dishes.

Make a day-before list
- Confirm the guest count and any dietary needs.
- Set out plates, napkins, cups, and serving pieces.
- Check the preparation and storage directions for each recipe.
- Decide what will be served at the table and what will stay on a side surface.
- Choose music and clear a place for coats and bags.
Give yourself a moment to arrive, too
Allow a short pause before guests are due so you can change clothes, tidy the preparation area, and take a breath. When someone offers help, give her one simple task.
The nicest part of brunch is the conversation. Plan enough to make space for it, then let the gathering be its own occasion.

Tip Tuesday: invite two, not twenty
Start with two friends and a time you can enjoy together. Coffee and dessert or a simple lunch can use the same planning steps as brunch: choose a manageable menu, set out your dishes, and leave yourself time to sit down.
